The Penguin Hotel star rating should be 2 stars not 3 stars. Justin, one of our Guest, explains why:
The Front Porch Cafe and the Penguin Hotel are not associated so don’t expect any room service. There is no normal hotel lobby and only one person working the small front desk at any given time.
Early check-in will cost you $50.
The rooms do look like the pictures but note the worn decor has been around for 10 years or more. As you enter the elevator you get this smell of restaurant cooking and cherry air freshener. When you enter the room you overwhelmed by cheap air freshener-Gardenia.
The rooms do have security safes which seems to be the norm in the South Beach area. Our room had a wet bar sink and a mini-fridge. Room did not have any tissues (Kleenex) around only toilet paper again definitely not 3 stars.
Our bathroom had blackish mold on the wall behind the sink which was nasty. The bathroom did have a hair-drier but is was falling off the wall and needed to be reattached, it could have fallen into the toilet very easily. The AC unit would only cool to like 73 degrees which is not that cool at night.
While the room did have a nice flat screen TV the dish/cable was full of static on 75% of the approximately 40 available channels. The night staff was informed about the static on the TV but was given an excuse is was the current weather storm. Next day was clear/sunny and no storms still had static on the same channels. The queen size bed was super soft and sagged in the middle and should be replaced.
The Front Porch Cafe had the best breakfast food on the strip and all the locals agreed. The Breakfast offerings were outstanding with nice size portions. You have to try the hash browns and French Toast. Coffee was better than Starbuck’s and about equal with Peet’s however with a touch of flare. I definitely will be eating Breakfast at the Front Porch for my next trip to SOBE.
Other less expensive hotels with a 3 star rating in South Beach area offered better amenities in comparison but the Penguin location was right on strip. I will not be staying at the Penguin again unless they radically clean up their offerings.
My overall rating for the Penguin Hotel is just 2.00 of 5.00 = Okay.
Good luck on your hotel search and hope this review helps.
