Built in the 1930s by architect Henry Maloney, the Angler’s Hotel was originally two graceful Mediterranean Revival buildings that fell into years of abandonment. In 2007, a meticulous renovation revamped the buildings and added two more, creating one of the unsung jewels in South Beach’s ostentatious crown.
This is Miami, after all, so the Angler’s comes correct with poolside cabanas and daybeds.Eschewing SoBe’s cliché pastel-and-white palette, the Angler’s features rich, dark woods and a neutral color scheme that brings warmth to its sizable rooms.
Accommodations come in two flavors: Studio Suites and Manor Villas. Although one-level Studio Suites have balconies or terraces with pool or city views, it’s well worth the upgrade to the duplex villas that have main-level living areas and second-floor bedrooms linked by a spiral staircase. All rooms come with nice touches like plasma TVs, DVD players, iPod docking stations with surround sound in every room, a wet bar and a refrigerator.
Chill out in a poolside cabana or on a sun bed (where you can also get an outdoor spa treatment), or stroll a couple of blocks to the beach, where the Angler’s guests have beach concession billing privileges in a designated area of the sand near 7th Street.
The Angler’s is popular with Europeans, which gives the place an international feel, and the staff is stupendous, going out of its way to demonstrate all your room’s amenities, write you personal notes, and remember any anniversary you’ve mentioned or request you may have made. And the personalized printed business cards with your name and the hotel’s address and phone number on them make you feel as if this is indeed your home away from home in Miami.
